The Work & Artist Bio
Playful and profound, Kim Adams’s sculptural works are bewitching, enchanting and undeniably desirable. Blue Bug, 2016, is a virtuosically rendered simulacrum of — in this case a VW “bug.” Having all the seductive appeal of a miniature, this piece is a carefully wrought sculptural work of material beauty.
Born in Edmonton in 1951, Kim Adams studied Visual Arts at the University of Victoria (BC), focusing on painting and sculpture. His work has been presented in galleries and museums, as well as in public and outdoor locations, across Canada and internationally for over four decades. Major survey exhibitions of his work were presented at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Oakville Galleries, Museum London, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and The Power Plant Contemporary Art.
He has been featured in solo and group exhibitions as well as biennials internationally, including at Shedhalle (Zurich, Switzerland, 1990), Centraal Museum (Utrecht, Holland, 1995), “Sculpture Projects” (Munster, Germany, 1997), “InSite” (San Diego, 1997), Sydney Biennial (Australia, 2002), “Burlesques contemporain”, Jeu de Paume (Paris, France, 2005), Galerie Stadtpark (Krems, Austria, 2007), “Beyond/In Western New York” (Buffalo, NY, 2010), “Insiders”, Musée d’art contemporain (Bordeaux, France, 2010), “Oh, Canada”, Mass MOCCA (US, 2012), the Winnipeg Art Gallery (2023) among many others. He is the subject of numerous books and catalogues, most recently a monograph on his ongoing, permanent sculpture Bruegel Bosch Bus (1997 – ongoing) at the Art Gallery of Hamilton (2021). His work is in numerous major public collections such as the Vancouver Art Gallery, Musée d’art contemporain (Montréal), Art Gallery of Ontario, and the National Gallery of Canada. He was the recipient of the Gershon Iskowitz Award (2012) a Simon Guggenheim Fellowship (2013), and the Governor General’s Award for Visual Arts and Media Award (2014).
