How To Buy Wine & Spirits at Waddington’s

Waddington’s under the authority of the LCBO offers both live and online auctions of fine wines and spirits, which augment our seasonal series of fine art and decorative auctions, various unique collector and benefit auctions, and monthly online auctions across all our specialty areas.

We’re pleased to provide our expertise on all aspects of wine collection including managing your cellar, advice on storage and insurance coverage.

Conditions of Sale


Waddington’s charges a buyer’s premium on the hammer price. Buyer’s premium and applicable taxes are added to the hammer price. Taxes are exempt for any items that are directly shipped from our premises out of Canada; the buyer is required to pay taxes as per the tax status of that province. Buyer’s premium is applied on a per lot basis.
Live and Online Auctions: 20%


You must register before bidding at any of our auctions; it’s quick and easy.

Live Auctions
Registration for a Live Auction is free and can be completed on the day of the auction. Upon completion of registration you will be assigned a bidding number.

Online Auctions
Registration for our online auctions is completed through our website. Once registered, you will be assigned a bidding number for an online auction when you log into your account. You only need to register once to participate in all of our online auctions. Click here to Register


Waddington’s provides several convenient and secure methods for bidding at our auctions.

Bidding in person

Raise your hand or your bidding number given to you when you registered. Don’t be shy; after your first bid, the auctioneer will watch for you.

Absentee bids

If you can’t attend the auction you can register an absentee bid with our office. Waddington’s will bid on your behalf to purchase the item at the lowest bid not exceeding your specified maximum. Absentee bids must be received at least four (4) hours prior to the auction.

Telephone bids

An alternative manner to participate in a live auction is through telephone bidding. As with absentee bidding, you must contact our office at least four (4) hours in advance of the auction to arrange telephone bidding. Once registered for a telephone bid(s) you will be contacted by telephone by a member of our staff just prior to the item being offered. Please note due to volume of telephone bid requests, this service is available on a first come-first served basis.

Online Auction Bidding

Place online bids anytime up to the noted end time for the desired lot. If a bid is received in the final five minutes of the auction, the countdown clock is reset an additional five minutes, until no further bids are received. You can leave absentee bids by entering the maximum amount you would like to bid up to. The software will bid on your behalf up to that amount.

Register for online auctions


Payment for purchases must be made within 48 hours of the auction. We accept payment by travelers cheque, bank draft, electronic transfer (fee applies), VISA or Mastercard (up to $25,000). Canadian clients may also use INTERAC direct debit as payment (in person only).

Fine Wine and Spirits – Pick Up and Delivery of Purchased Items

Pick Up

Clients can pick up their purchased wine or spirits directly from Iron Gate Private Wine Management Iron Gate. All pick up times will be arranged through Waddington’s and include a 48-hour business day notice period prior to pick-up. Pick up hours are between 10 AM and 6 PM M-F, by appointment only. Please bring a copy of your paid invoice as proof of payment. As all persons receiving wine must be 19 years of age or older, photo identification may also be requested.

On the Saturday the week following the auction from 10 AM to 4 PM, Iron Gate have agreed to allow clients wishing to pick up on a weekend to do so, also by appointment. Invoice(s) must be paid in full by end of day Wednesday for a Saturday pick up. For example, an auction held September 22nd would have a Saturday October 3rd pick up day, invoice(s) to be paid by Wednesday September 30th.

Items purchased and not picked up after 30 days following the auction will incur storage fees at $4.00 per lot per month.

Waddington’s will be responsible for charging and collecting storage fees, to be paid before purchased items will be released. For more information on storage, please see below.

Xpeditr staff is dedicated to trust, confidentiality and integrity with one point of contact. Clients are responsible for any duties, taxes, shipping or other charge associated with shipping arrangements.

For delivery services outside the GTA, please contact Perry Hehn at Safer Shipping Inc. (formerly Envoy), 416.299.3367 ([email protected]) to arrange for shipment of your wine. Clients are responsible for any duties, taxes, shipping or other charges associated with shipping arrangements.

Note: Certain states or other countries may impose limitations on the amount of and quantity of alcoholic beverages that can be legally brought into their jurisdiction. Waddington’s is not responsible for obtaining shipping permits or licenses and advise our clients to investigate any possible limitations imposed by their local region.

Fine Wine and Spirits – Storage Waddington’s fully understands the importance of maintaining an ideal, protected environment for the storage of fine wines and spirits. All wine and spirits consigned to our auctions will be stored at our storage associate Iron Gate Private Wine Management, which meets or exceeds the best standards of storage conditions.
