One of the great joys of our work
We rely on the scholarship and opinion of esteemed colleagues throughout the Canadian art world who are invariably generous with their time and interested in the paintings we discover each season. One of the great joys of our work is the role we play in adding to that scholarship.
In 2015 we were entrusted with a rare Verner canvas that can only be described as “long lost”.
Joan Murray, the foremost expert in the artist’s works, knew the painting was extant but its whereabouts were unknown. This work had been confused with another which had presumably been entered in the 1874 OSA exhibition, by the artist.
In fact, our discovery of this early and important painting refuted that supposition as, indeed, the painting submitted to the 1874 exhibition was almost assuredly this lot.
Works that are fresh to market ignite interest in top collectors and, against a conservative estimate of $25,000 – 30,000, this lot brought $94,400.
