Painter-sculptor Ulysse Comtois’ professional career spanned over forty years.
A painter and sculptor in earlier stages of his career, Comtois returned to painting in the 1970s using an enlarged pointillist technique to explore the energy generated by vivid chromatic juxtapositions. Through this oscillation between expressive and geometric forms, he became became interested in Dutch abstract artist Piet Mondrian’s legacy in his painting.
“My art philosophy is that distinct categories such as abstract art and figurative art don’t exist. These are not mutually exclusive, opposing genres. Rather, they form one continuum. It’s a question of degrees, not of species.” (Comtois, 1991).
