George Deem (1932-2008), American
Mixed-media, pen and ink and watercolour on buff wove paper; signed and titled in pencil verso. Unframed.
Sheet 18 x 22 ins — 45.7 x 55.9 cms
Best known for his appropriations of famous works, here Deem has manipulated a chalk drawing by Matthias Grünewald. Deem emulates the chalk highlights of Grünewald’s Crying Head (ca. 1520, Museum of Prints and Drawings, Berlin, Germany) with gouache and superimposes scores of aggressive red marks to the image.
