George Sumner was born in San Francisco, CA and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. He is an environmental activist who began his career by creating marine-themed abstracts in the 1970s. He had an unusual method of painting large canvases which involved application of his paints with baby diapers prior to blending and layering. This painting depicts the Hawaiian volcano on the island of Kilauea, 1985.
