1904年2月6日,日本隊在中國旅順的 俄國艦隊發動突然襲擊,持續一年半之久的日俄戰爭爆發。1905年9月,戰爭以沙俄失敗告終,在美國斡旋下,日俄簽訂「樸茨茅斯條約」,日本取代沙俄在中國東北的支配地位。1906年3月31日,日本發布第151號帝國令,向參加日俄戰爭的人員頒發了"明治卅七八年戰役從軍紀章"。此章即為1904-1905年間所授予日俄戰爭參戰人員從軍紀念章。

瑞寶章為日本於1888年開始制定的勳章。國家以在公共事務有功勞者,長年從事公務者,功績受到推舉者為授與對象。瑞寶章的設計以古代的寶鏡為中心,搭配16個連珠,8條有4條線的光線。寶鏡模仿伊勢神宮的神器八咫鏡。此拍品中,「鈕」使用桐花的花葉造型,「綬」為白色及橙黃雙線(舊制),襟綬為所授予男性的倒三角形。
