The figure of light celadon toned nephrite and seated in virasana with crossed legs covered by the folds of the dhoti, the hands in meditation and eyes downcast, the face and hair exquisitely rendered under a five-paneled crown with relief images of Tathagatha Buddhas. Carved marble base stained blue to imitate lapis lazuli

From a private Chicago collector, purchased in the 1990’s from Sotheby’s Chicago. This piece was reputedly owned by Potter Palmer II (d. 1943), one time President of the First National Bank of Chicago and President of the Art Institute, who bequeathed it to his wife Pauline Kohlsaat (1882-1956), and thence by descent within the family
