Provenance:

Japanese Ceramics from the Collection of Sir Cornelius Van Horne (lots 28-30)
Sir William Cornelius Van Horne (1843-1915), president of Canadian Pacific Railway and Honourary Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.C), was an avid art collector and one of Montreal’s most significant pre-war collections, which also included Asian works of art. Van Horne had a particular fondness for Japanese porcelain and kept meticulous records of his collection, assigning specific inventory numbers to the majority of his items. Following his death, most of Van Horne’s Asian pottery was bequeathed to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Years later, after the passing of his wife Lady van Horne, a portion of the collection was donated to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.
