Provenance:

From the Estate of Monsieur Tiedemann, Moscow and Montreal, who acquired the coin while working in Harbin around 1911-1916 as a Russian diplomat to Czar Nicholas II. After returning to Russia, he fled to Montreal during the Bolshevik Revolution where he settled and passed away during the 1930’s. The coin was passed down within his family and to the current owner.

Note:

Yuan Shikai (1859-1916) was a politician and general whose role was essential in bringing down the Qing Dynasty. Elected the first President of the Republic of China in 1912, he declared himself the ‘Great Emperor of China’ in 1915. However, his reign was short-lived when he died of kidney failure in 1916.
