Provenance:

Lots 431 to 451- A Collection of Ming and Qing Dynasty Jade Carvings from an Important Montreal Private Collection. Most of the pieces acquired during the 1970's and 1980's from the UK

Note:

The vajra (or dorje) is a Tantric Buddhist symbol for dispelling evil forces from sacrificial enclosures. The name itself means an unwavering hardness which is immutable.
Jade examples of vajras are rare, but an example was recently sold at Woolley & Wallis, Salisbury, November 17, 2010, lot 129. Gilt bronze examples are more common such as those sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, May 29, 2007, lot 1582 and 1583
