Large Reticulated Rhinoceros Horn ‘Squirrels and Grapes’ Cup, Late Qing Dynasty

Carved as a tall growth of grape vines and prunus branches coming out of the rocky ground, and supporting a three-tiered lotus cup at the top, the whole inhabited by numerous squirrels. The large black base carefully carved as a mountain landscape with pine trees, double gourds and lingzhi fungus

From the Estate of the late Dr. John Thoburn Williamson, a Canadian geologist who acquired the carving in Hong Kong during the 1950’s. Thence by decent within the family

The squirrel and grape motif is a rebus for longevity. A cylindrical cup also decorated with this theme can be found in Christie’s New York ‘Selections from the Robert H. Blumenfield Collection’ March 25, 2010, lot 808
