Note:
Kano Tanshin was the eldest son of Kano Tan'yu (1602-1674), who was one of the last of the 'three famous brushes' of the Kano school, a school of painting that dominated from the late 15th century until the Meiji period. Kano Tanshin became the second generation head of the Kajibashi branch after 1674. Although a member of the Kano school, Morimasa was known for his stylistic similarities to the competing Tosa school, which was primarily derived from ancient Japanese art as opposed to the Chinese-influenced Kano school.
