Note:

Lacquerware production flourished in Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, during the mid to late Qing dynasty. Distinguished by its exceptional lightness and use of monochromatic finishes, literature presents two main theories regarding the substrate of Fuzhou lacquer snuff bottles. Some sources suggest a textile base, such as silk, to explain their lightweight nature. However, the present example appears to be executed on a dried, lightweight wood, such as balsa, evidenced by the core layer visible underneath the slight nibbling of the lacquer layer at the mouth.
