Note:

The taste for the "antique revival" style, which first emerged in the Song dynasty, continued to flourish throughout the Ming period and influenced artistic production across all categories, including personal adornments and jade carving. The present hair ornament reflects this enduring interest in earlier forms, adopting the appearance of traditional court headdresses that were worn by adult men to secure their topknots. These headdresses were created in a variety of materials, and their social significance was conveyed through the number of ribs included in each piece. With seven ribs, the current example would have been intended for a prince.
