Note:

This form, along with the similar 'mallet' or 'kinuta' vase, is long admired in particular by Japanese collectors of fine Chinese ceramics, and is unique in demonstrating the extent that the Longquan category can portray in terms of subtlety and elegance.

Furthermore, the current vase exemplifies Song dynasty moulding techniques. A moulding block would have worn down after being applied several times over, so the decoration in earlier impressions would appear more rigid whereas later impressions would become more blurred. The current lot would have been pressed with a block in the mid-portion of its lifespan, striking a perfect balance in a subtle design that is just legible enough to make out fine details in the floral decoration.
