約翰·黑澤戴爾·萊維斯先生是一位猶太英裔作家,鋼琴譜曲家,講師。萊維斯先生於1904到1949年間居住於上海。三十年代早期至中期遊歷於美國,加拿大,夏威夷等地研究並教學。

值得一提的是,萊維斯先生1936年所著《中國音樂藝術基礎》受到著名文學家林語堂先生與《天下月刊》雜誌的高度書面評價。其文章《古代中國音樂藝術》於1935年11月發表在《天下月刊》中。並於1937年12月,再次發表《中國藝術中的音韻學與書法》。同年,《亞洲》雜誌刊登其文章《中國音樂》。

萊維斯先生在上海居住期間,與林語堂,梅蘭芳等文人雅客過從甚密,並受到二人讚賞。萊維斯先生所住上海法租界 -- 傑佛里大道(現淮海中路)與馬斯南路(現思南路),亦為梅蘭芳先生故居所在地。對中國音樂的熱愛使得彼此成為至交契友。二人經常往來於彼此住所探討研究中國古典音樂藝術。
