A Fine Gold-Lacquer 'Dragon' Document Box and Cover (Ryoshibako), Edo Period, 18th/19th Century

Of standard rectangular form, the box intricately worked with gold and brown takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, the cover depicting a lean dragon emerging from billowing waves backed by Mt. Fuji, gold-sprinkled nashiji applied to the interior and sides, further decorated with a recumbent stag under maple tree to the cover interior and birds and wisteria to the sides, the maple subtly embellished with mother-of-pearl
