The Work & Artist Bio

Landscape and the natural world have always been central to Sarah Anne Johnson’s work. This photograph of a prairie landscape silhouetted against a broad dusk sky makes this particular image iconic. Three vertical rectangles in hand-applied rose gold leaf are foregrounded against a mauve and rosy sky. The delicate gold leaf which flutters on the columns with the slightest breath are, at the same time, monumental and call up, in contrasting scale, Richard Serra’s massive vertical steel plates installed in 2014 in the desert in Qatar.

Sarah Anne Johnson received her Fine Arts Honours Degree from the University of Manitoba in 2002 and her Masters in Fine Arts from Yale School of Art in 2004. She has had solo exhibitions in Canada and the US and her work is in major public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Musée departmental d’art contemporain de Rochechouart, France; Hirshorn Museum, Washington D.C.; the Art Gallery of Ontario, and in numerous private collections in Canada, the US and abroad. Johnson has been the recipient of a number of prestigious public commissions and awards. Primarily photo-based, her work also includes sculpture, installations, performance and film. Articles and reviews of her work have appeared in Border Crossings, Town and Country, Frieze, New York Magazine, Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Playboy, Juxtapoz, Art in America, The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, The New York Times, among others. Her work has been the subject of numerous catalogues, among them: Sarah Anne Johnson, Wonderland, Contemporary Art Museum, Raleigh, North Carolina; “Oh Canada”, MASS MoCA, Connecticut; Sarah Anne Johnson, House on fire, Plug In and ACAD; The Younger than Jesus Artist Directory, Phaidon Press and others.
