The Work & Artist Bio

Does anyone in this country better capture the deliciously attractive nature of the quotidian than Margaux Williamson? In this superb 8 x 10” oil on board, the angular, decisive cuts on the apples, the grain of the brown table, the grey cutting surface and the overall, flat-out-and-up-tilt of the painting, together revisit a kind of comforting, domesticated cubism. Apples would be enough to persuade George Braque to drop into Chez Marqaux’s for a bite. This flawless still life, which was painted as a gift for Border Crossings' auction, is as alive as anything could possibly be.

Margaux Williamson is a painter who lives in Toronto. In the spring of 2021 the McMichael Canadian Art Collection organized a retrospective of her work and catalogue which traveled to other museums in Canada until spring of 2023. Her most recent series was exhibited at White Cube, Hong Kong in 2023. She has published a book of paintings, I Could See Everything, which took the form of an exhibition catalogue for a made-up museum located in the Yukon, published by Coach House Press. Her feature length no budget art video, Teenager Hamlet, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and can be found on UbuWeb. She also has written movie reviews and pamphlets and has collaborated with friends and institutions on other projects. Her work has been published in Frieze, Art Forum, the New York Times, The Believer, Border Crossings, Canadian Art, The Globe and Mail, and others, and is in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada; the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal; the McMichael Canadian Art Collection; the Bruce Bailey Collection in Canada; the Longlati Foundation in Shanghai; Tumurun Museum in Indonesia and the Australia China Art Foundation. A lengthy interview with the artist was published in Border Crossings’ special issue on Painting, fall 2023.
