Leghe Suthers (1856-1924)
Additional Images
Provenance:
Private Collection, Toronto
Note:
Born in Oldham, Suthers lived for many years in Newlyn, Cornwall, where much of his work remains in private collections. Little is known about the artist but a mention of him in a letter from Stanhope Forbes to his mother in 1884 places him in Newlyn by 1883. It is thought that he had probably stopped painting in Newlyn by 1900.
He was not an official member of The Newlyn School, an art colony of artists based in or near Newlyn, from the 1880s until the early twentieth century. It is thought that he had probably stopped painting in Newlyn by 1900 and had settled along with Frederick Hall in Porlock, Somerset, the two being friends and of a similar academic and artistic persuasion.
