Note:
Commander Tufnell, a career naval officer from 1903 until his retirement in 1946, was a prolific painter of military vessels, mainly depicting British actions in World War II.
Tufnell was born in Bangalore, India, where his father, Major Robert Hutchison Campbell Tufnell, who fought in the Afghan wars, was stationed. By 1901, the family had returned to England. In 1903, at the age of fifteen, Tufnell became a cadet on the HMS Britannia.
