Provenance:

Frederick W. Thom Limited, Toronto;
From whom purchased by the Private Collection, Toronto on December 16, 1972 with receipt;
Their Estate Collection, Toronto

Note:

Lesrel’s brilliant colouration and delicate touch resulted in the creation of historically correct military vignettes. Examples such as this lot demonstrate his exquisite finish and commitment to fine draughtmanship. Lesrel’s output was extremely small; his paintings were often sold before they were finished and are exceedingly rare.

According to Federick W. Thom’s biography, "In the Guard Room" is a fine example of the work of Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel, embodying a rich colour, superb technique and a great attention to period decor.”
