  • Indonesian Ceremonial War Shield, late 19th or early 20th century
Provenance:

Private Collection, Toronto, ON

Note:

Indonesian war and dance shields from the late 19th and early 20th century were made in a staggering variety of forms and sizes. The present example is large in scale and constructed of light material. The surface is embellished with elaborate scroll designs around a central boss, as in some shields found in the westmost regions of Island Southeast Asia. Intact shields of the size of the present example are uncommon, and may have been primarily ceremonial due to their incompatibility with the densely forested geography of the region.
