Note:

"One day, instead of starting off in the car, Cass took a stool and sat down on our front lawn, facing away from the house and barn, towards a huge old pine which stood alone in our field across the road. We kept an eye on him, and when we could contain ourselves no longer, we strolled over and saw that he was using his oil sketch technique. Of course, we thought it was the best one he ever painted, and when he gave it to us, we were thrilled. The subtleties of the different shades of green in Putnam's Pine are truly masterful, and I studied it often, wondering how he achieved his effect. It is one of the treasures of our collection."
