Provenance:
Ex Libris Commander Benjamin Street, Royal Navy (bookplates)
Note:
Captain Benjamin Street, a prominent Royal Navy officer and the area’s first magistrate, was among the elite, half-pay British military personnel who established the pioneer settlement of March Township. Following the 1819 Ferguson Treaty, the British Crown opened this northern portion of Carleton County along the Ottawa River, issuing substantial free land grants to retired military and naval officers to cultivate the region and secure a loyal local gentry.
