Note:

Pilot’s recurring palette of indigo, rose madder, mars brown and yellow ochre transforms a snowy landscape into a foreshadowing of Spring. The billowing riverbanks and the frosted water appear golden. The cold recedes, the ice melts away, heralding that, on this day, in this scene, Pilot provides a brief repose from the cold.
