RAFAL MALCZEWSKI
Provenance:
Private Collection, Montreal
Note:
Malczewski immigrated to Canada from Poland in 1942, and quickly settled into the French-speaking community of Montreal. A friendship between Malczewski and the Polish Consul resulted in the first Canadian exhibition of his paintings in Ottawa (1942). In the winter of 1943, Malczewski found himself inspired by a stay in the Rocky Mountains – there creating a series that he would exhibit widely between 1944-1949. Landscapes and watercolours lay at the heart of Malczewski’s oeuvre: scenes which he often animated with life and play by means of small figures.
