Provenance:

Private Collection, Toronto

Note:

Located along the banks of the Madawaska River, the hamlet of Combermere was first settled under the name of Dennisons’ Bridge.  Sitting on the Peterson Road, thousands of colonists passed through this coach stop en route to settle in Hastings, Renfrew and Haliburton Counties.  Casson’s painting speaks to the hamlet’s history as a momentary resting place for weary travellers.  The lush green grasses and shady trees offer a brief repose, before the winding path leads the viewer’s eye unto the journey ahead.
