Lot 54
CORNELIUS KRIEGHOFF
Provenance:
Private Collection, Toronto
Literature:
Dennis Reid, Krieghoff, Images of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, 1999, page 82.
Note:
Krieghoff painted many scenes of habitant life and among his great cast of stock characters were tradesmen or seasonal labours. In this lot we see a woodcutter, possibly pausing to check the sharpness of his axe. The format of this work is Krieghoff's response to a tariff that had been imposed on prints. Cleverly, he produced smaller paintings to appeal to “buyers of modest means...”
