Provenance:

Loch Mayberry Gallery, Winnipeg
Private Collection, Winnipeg

Note:

This large canvas by FitzGerald conveys much about early influences on this artist and as such is an important work by a painter whose major canvases rarely appear at auction. This work bears a close compositional relationship to a work entitled Late Fall, Manitoba, 1918 in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada though this lot is slightly larger. Unlike so many other renowned Canadian artists of his generation, FitzGerald did not study abroad and his knowledge of movements, such as Impressionism, was acquired from secondary sources such as art publications. FitzGerald distilled the essentials from the information he was able to access and began applying Impressionist techniques to the prairie landscape of his native province.
