Provenance:

Walter Klinkhoff Gallery, Montreal
Private Collection, Maple, Ontario

Note:

A native of Quebec who relocated to Toronto to help formulate a national artistic program through the formation of the Group of Seven, A.Y. Jackson (1882-1974) had never abandoned his home province. He returned there often to go on sketching excursions with fellow artists. He marvelled at the numerous villages including Grenville on the Ottawa River. Farmhouse, Grenville, Que. demonstrates his signature style of exaggerated, rhythmic lines and composition.

The treatment of the uncultivated field in the foreground is a pronouncement about the character of a place and the season, early springs last remnants of snow, and what may be a sheet of ice on the river behind the farmhouse.
