Provenance:

Private Collection, Toronto

Literature:

Evelyn Lloyd Coburn, F.S. Coburn: Beyond the Landscape, The Boston Mills Press, Erin, 1996, page 110 and 111.

Note:

Some of F.S. Coburn’s (1871-1960) finest winter scenes were painted in the 1940’s when he was in his seventies. These winter scenes were not something that was, for him, repetitive. He took pride in each one he did, finding distinctive ways to make them unique, whether the changing seasons, the clouds in the sky or the shadows of the trees.

For his 75th birthday, three years before this work was made, Coburn painted one of his best works of his favourite winter scene, making his nephew promise that it would always remain in the family.
