Provenance:

Estate of the artist
Private Collection, Toronto

Note:

A contemporary of the Group of Seven, Toronto-born P.C. Sheppard (1882-1965) created art that contributed to the development of a distinctly Canadian tradition that placed emphasis on modernist tendencies. His landscapes of Canada are imbued with poetic charm and nostalgia of the simple life of a far-gone era.

This painting depicts a village nestled on the Humber River north of Toronto. The row of farm houses peeking through tall bare trees is crowned by a colourful sky above. In these last hours of the day just before sundown.
