Provenance:

Continental Galleries Inc., Montreal
Private Collection, Quebec

Note:

Rue Laval is among the many picturesque streets of Montreal’s Plateau neighbourhood and is lined with
brightly coloured duplexes with oriole windows and balconies.

While John Little (b.1928) executed the work in 1980 there is something of a “days of old” feel to the composition, probably relating to the retro shape of the vehicles parked curbside. Little has made a choice here to emphasize memory and nostalgia over the empirical, selecting out the less picturesque aspects of his subject such as telephone wires or parking signs.
