Provenance:

Ladies’ Committee Sale of Contemporary Canadian Art, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal
Private Collection, Cobourg

Note:

Abstract-Little Picture Gold, falls within a period of great experimentation in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and demonstrates Gordon Smith’s (b.1919) strong command of both composition as well as the handling of paint and use of colour. In the 1960s, Smith introduced more rich and sensuous colours to his palette, such as gold and intense blood reds. Before, during and after he completed this piece, Smith’s aesthetic style changed dramatically as he grappled with his own artistic insecurities and internal drive to keep moving forward with his practice, as such, this piece is a unique example of a temporal moment of intense artistic reflection and experimentation.
