Note:
Riverside Farm, executed in 1896, is typical of Cullen’s work from this period and is heavily influenced by Impressionism. While this painting does not have the same atmospheric quality of light or looseness of brushstroke that is characteristic of Monet, Riverside Farm exhibits an obvious fascination with the relationship between light, shadow and colour. The hints of red and orange in the trees suggest that autumn is approaching. Cullen captures the farm on the edge of change which, to a still largely agrarian society, would signal the start of the intense preparation necessary for the Canadian winter to come.
