Note:

Striking colour and vigorous brushtrokes seem at odds with Shilling’s contemplative portrait, yet it is these elements which serve to animate what might otherwise read as a human still-life. While his portraits often remain unnamed, Shilling’s tender treatment of his subject leaves no doubt about his real-ness. With each gesture, Young Man is animated and Shilling clearly conveys his character if not his actual identity.
