Note:
A painting that appears at first glance to be two-dimensional, Reid’s 'February Thaw' incorporates sculptural elements sourced from nature, in the form of sticks and straw. Belonging to the artist’s “Borderlands” series, works from this period synthesize collaged materials with more traditional painted elements. The artist explains that media were “chosen for their tactile qualities and reference to processes” with the intention to “[explore] the transition zones between urban, agricultural and natural areas.”[1] Reid often created these paintings outdoors, bringing them to various sites of his choosing. He explains that the natural elements “may become collaborators in the painting process,” as is evidenced by the over-wintered husks used in "February Thaw." [2]
