SYLVAIN COUSINEAU (1949 - 2013)

Sylvain P. Cousineau was born in Arvida, Québec in 1949. He studied Communication Arts at Loyola College in Montréal, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971. In 1974 he obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York. Cousineua taught photograph at the University of Ottawa’s Visual Arts Department from 1975 to 1988, this period being when some of his most fruitful works were produced.

Cousineau was known primarily for his whimsical assemblages and his often colourful and imaginative paintings, but black and white photography is also an ongoing and engaging aspect of his creative life. Cousineau passed away in 2013 in England.
