Note:
In his works on paper, Chris Kline demonstrates a remarkable ability to animate minimalist painting. Close inspection reveals how the 'solid' blue of this untitled work is broken by the delicate striations of the artist's brush. Light and shadow and depth and surface interact harmoniously across the piece, while the blue sets a meditative tone. The richness of his blue brings to mind another Klein...Yves, the French artist who described his monochromatic blue paintings of the 1950s and 60s as “open window[s] to freedom.” Here, Kline's painting offers the viewer a similar opportunity to engage in a boundless experience of colour.
