Lot Report

Provenance:

Private Collection, Calgary.

Note:

The activist and apocalyptic vision of artist John Scott emerges in drawings, paintings, sculptures and installations which take angry aim at the techno-military-industrial complex and all manner of war, violence, and oppression. Among his best-known works is Trans Am Apocalypse (1993), for which he used a nail to scratch the full text of the Book of Revelations into a black-painted Pontiac. However, Scott is just as celebrated for his emphatic gestural drawing and painting, featuring characters such as human-bunny hybrids, tigers and proto-military silhouettes. Generally considered one of Canada's most socially-engaged established artists, Scott was awarded the first Governor General's Award for Visual and Media Arts in 2000. He has participated in numerous solo and group shows at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Air Gallery, London, England, and the Art Gallery of Windsor, with an important career retrospective planned for the U.S. in 2013. His work is in the collections of significant museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Canada Council Art Bank, as well as in numerous private collections.
