Literature:
See Hermann Uhde-Bernays, “Carl Spitzweg; des Meisters Leben und Werk. Seine Bedeutung in der Geschichte der Munchener Kunst”, 1922, Rabrendes Volf, illustrated with a photocopied illustration, plate 90 for a similar painting of this subject.
Note:
The illustration in Uhde-Bernays’ book of Spitzweg’s similar oil of this subject painted in 1850 is a reproduction in black and white. The illustration although blurry shows more details in the background and in the figures compared to the more sketch like version of the present work. The present lot may be the oil sketch by Carl Spitzweg that is subsequently reproduced in Uhde-Bernays’ book.
