Note:
Riopelle's progress was sometimes erratic, the movements of the "image hunter" mimicking those of a hunter roaming the forest. Bearing witness to this is a short series of three large lithographs, which could have been united into a majestic triptych composed of a horizontal image flanked by two vertical ones. Nature is the theme -- the prints are called Automne (Fall), Été indien (Indian Summer) and Clairière (Clearing) -- but it is referred to only analytically, as if the landscape were encoded...For in these works Riopelle was exploring not only forest interiors but the language of the lithograph medium, reviving for the purpose the mood and handling of the large assemblages of 1967, but executing here (thanks once more to the skill of his printer) "seamless" collages. The earlier assemblages also bequeathed their large format to the lithographs -- for which the sheets had to be folded in two and each half printed from a separate plate -- as well as a definite kinship with the work of the "torn poster" artists.
