Note:

“Two types of fishing tools, both used in fish weirs, are displayed in this simply ordered composition. The spears, or leisters, are used to impale the fish, the outer arms acting as a spring to hold the catch. Gaffs can be used to gather the fish up quickly when large concentrations appear.”
