Note:
Lully and Quinault are important figures in the history of French opera and this fine, large and impressive work may be a maquette for a monument intended for Palais Garnier, Paris. The 1887 Coolican & Co. catalogue notes about this work" "This is the counterpart of that designed and made for the late Emperor of the French (Napoleon lll), and is pronounced to be the finest bronze group in America. Only two castings were made."
