His personal and professional interest in art led Notman to establish relationships with Montreal’s most prominent painters. Several of them, J. Fraser, Charles Jones Way and Robert Stuart Duncanson are represented in this, Notman’s first book. The book was published in 1863 “to foster the increasingly growing taste for works of art in Canada,” it was composed of 47 photographic plates of paintings, most by old masters, and two views from nature. It was the first art history book printed in Canada.
