Note:
The first European woodcut printing on paper in the early 15th century was used for printing religious images and playing cards. Some individual prints with two images on one sheet were folded and bound into books called “block books”. These early prints were sold to pilgrims in the early 1400’s. The ink for these early prints was sometimes made of lampblack (soot from oil lamps) mixed with varnish or boiled linseed oil.
