Note:
One of four lithographs created by Picasso to accompany the book by Jaime Sabartes, a Catalan Spanish artist, poet and close friend of Picasso.
In 1935, at the artist’s request, Sabartes moved to Paris to act as Picasso’s administrator. Sabartes was responsible for organizing Picasso’s papers, books and poems, as well arranging the artist’s exhibitions.
Picasso painted Sabartes’s likeness in 1902. This oil on canvas portrait, Le bock (Portrait de Jaime Sabartés), is housed in the Pushkin Museum (Moscow, Russia). During his tenure as friend and employee, Sabartes collected a multitude of works by Picasso. In 1963, he donated his collection to Museu Picasso (Barcelona, Spain) forming the core of the gallery, which was initially called Sabartes collection.
