ANTINORI SOLAIA TOSCANA IGT 2004 (1)
Tuscany.
u. bn. marked label. wrinkled capsule.
The thrilling 2004 Solaia (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc) is clearly one of the highlights of this great vintage. Endowed with massive amounts of concentration as well as structure, it is a big, powerful Solaia that does not sacrifice elegance or balance in its full-bodied personality. Packed with the essence of blackberries, chocolate, tar, smoke, cassis and menthol, this layered beauty exhibits great length and a persistent, warmly alcoholic finish. It has been stunning on the three occasions I have had it so far and is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024. June 2007 WA 96

The 2007 Cepparello comes across as rich, round and totally seductive in this tasting. Stylistically, it shares many attributes with the 1990 and 1997, although in my view it is more elegant than those wines. There is an immediacy about the 2007 that is highly appealing, and which will make the wine accessible relatively early. Layers of fruit build beautifully to an exciting crescendo of aromas and flavors. This is an undeniably sexy Cepparello. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. June 2012 WA 96

TENUTA SAN GUIDO BOLGHERI SASSICAIA SASSICAIA 2008 (1)

The 2008 Bolgheri Sassicaia is a wine without a winemaker. The last vintage made by Giacomo Tachis was 2007 and incoming enologist Graziana Grassini claims 2009 as her first vintage. Within the context of this retrospective, the 2008 vintage opens a new chapter, because it is the first wine to show evident tertiary definition and complexity. In fact, the wine performs beautifully with an exalted performance and ethereal aromas. They include cassis, wild berry, crushed mineral, licorice, petrol and grilled herb. This wine is really coming together now and is entering a very exciting moment in its drinking life. It boasts finesse, elegance and grace. Yet, it also shows unmistakable richness and structure that gives the wine an enormous presence in terms of mouthfeel. This was one of the top highlights of the retrospective.
